Yesterday, as part of our ongoing crackdown on anti-social behaviour in the community, the Wantage and Grove Neighbourhood Policing Team (NHPT) carried out an underage test purchase operation across Wantage town and the Grove area. Working in partnership with our dedicated police cadets, the team visited a number of licensed premises to test whether alcohol or vapes would be sold to individuals under the legal age. The cadets, acting under supervision, attempted to purchase both — helping us assess compliance and raise awareness among local vendors.
✅ During the course of the evening, 11 licensed premises were tested, with only one failing to comply with the legal requirements. We commend the majority of businesses for their vigilance and responsible retail practices. These operations are a vital tool in promoting community safety and protecting young people from the risks associated with underage drinking and vaping. We will continue to conduct these test purchases on random dates moving forward.
🚨 Additionally, during the evening, we received reports of anti-social behaviour (ASB) around Millbrook Square, Grove. As officers arrived to conduct further tests, several males made off from the area. Four individuals were detained and searched, resulting in the seizure of alcohol. Acceptable Behaviour Contracts (ABCs) will be issued to those identified.
We’d like to thank the participating businesses for their cooperation and continued commitment to keeping our community safe.
